Give Your Plants a Mid-Season Boost with Fertilizer: Here's How

As summer begins to wane, your garden's plants are still in full swing, and now is the perfect time to give them a mid-season boost with fertilizer.

Fertilizing now helps replenish the nutrients that have been depleted over the growing season and as a result of lots of heavy, constant watering, ensuring your plants remain vibrant and healthy. This extra nourishment strengthens roots and encourages late-season blooms, setting the stage for a strong finish before fall.

Feed your tired baskets and containers with a 20-20-20 fertilizer after each watering and you'll see a noticeable difference. In addition, work in some organic matter, like Sea Soil or Fish Soil, and then top them off with some slow-release 14-14-14 fertilizer for best results.

Food gardens require some extra nutrients this time of year, and will appreciate an application of Sea Soil and some 12-16-12 veggie food. Tomatoes require special care. Keep feeding them with 9-11-11 liquid tomato food to extend their harvest period until late September. If you're seeing black splotches, feed them with liquid calcium immediately or use an application of lime to help mitigate blossom end rot.

The hot weather has been hard on trees and shrubs, especially if you haven't been able to water much. A feeding of either slow-release 14-14-14 fertilizer or a flower and vegetable food, like 12-16-12, will tone and green them up. This is especially true for trees and shrubs in containers.

Whether you're tending to flowers, vegetables, or shrubs, a well-timed dose of fertilizer can make all the difference in maintaining lush, thriving gardens through the end of the season.
